Featured Black Excellence: Dr. Stephanie Willis

Dr. Stephanie Willis, a Wilmington native, is the esteemed Principal at Snipes Academy of Arts & Design. A dedicated member of New Hanover County Schools since 2017, Dr. Willis has devoted 28 years to the field of education, with experience in Brunswick and Pender County as well. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Curriculum and Instruction), a Master of School Administration, and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (K-6), equipping her with a wealth of knowledge and
a robust pedagogical toolkit.

Dr. Willis embarked on her teaching career in 1996, driven by a passion for teaching and helping others succeed. She quickly established herself as a dedicated, hard worker who understood the importance of building meaningful, positive relationships with students and their families. Over the years, Dr. Willis has taught Pre-K, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and has served as an Assistant Principal, Principal, and Alternative Program Coordinator. She also teaches part-time at UNCW during the fall
semesters for students entering the field of education. Dr. Willis’ teaching philosophy centers on the belief that EVERY student can grow and be successful. She recognizes that not all students learn at the same rate but believes in the potential of all
students, helping them believe in themselves as well. She fosters a work culture where everyone feels they belong and where it’s okay to take risks or make mistakes, as these are opportunities to learn and grow. Students and staff are encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning and to be leaders.

Dr. Willis is deeply involved in her community, reflecting her commitment to fostering positive change both inside and outside the classroom. She is an active member of the NHC-NAACP, where she works to promote equality and justice and does the majority of her work through the Education Committee. Dr. Willis also serves on the Board of Soaring as Eagles, an organization dedicated to empowering students and families of Title I Schools through education and mentorship. In addition, she is a member of the Educators of Color Network through UNCW and Delta Kappa Gamma, which provide her with platforms to advocate for educational policy changes and support fellow educators. As a charter member of the National Council of Negro Women (Coastal Wilmington), Dr. Willis stays abreast of the latest educational research and contributes to initiatives
that benefit the community.

Outside of her professional roles, Dr. Willis enjoys traveling and often incorporates her experiences into her teaching to enrich the learning experience for students. She also serves as the Financial Secretary/Trustee at her church, further demonstrating her dedication to community service and leadership. Dr. Willis’ extensive community involvement underscores her commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all, both within her school and in the broader community.
